Our History

The Rock Institute has deep roots in the local community. The land was generously gifted to the parish by local benefactor Robert Washington Dana, with construction beginning in 1918 and completed by 1920. Built using locally quarried blue Elvin stone under a traditional slate roof, the building stands as a testament to craftsmanship and community spirit.

From the outset, the Institute was established “for the use of the inhabitants of the parish of St Minver Lowlands, without distinction of political, religious, or other opinions.” It was intended as a place for meetings, lectures, classes, and a wide range of recreational and leisure activities, all aimed at improving the quality of life for local residents.

In May 1981, ownership of the building was formally transferred to the Charity Commission, continuing its original aims. At that time, the Institute was proudly supported by a wide range of local groups, including:

  • Rock Bingo Group
  • Rock Methodist Church Council
  • Rock Whist Drive Group
  • St Minver Garden Society
  • St Minver Girl Guides & Brownies
  • St Minver Lowlands Parish Council
  • St Minver Parochial Church Council
  • Polzeath Women’s Institute

Continued Development

The Institute has always benefited from strong leadership and a committed volunteer committee. Over the years, significant upgrades have been made to both the building and its facilities, including:

  • A complete re-roofing and slate hanging
  • Replacement of all windows
  • Newly-insulated ceiling
  • The addition of a modern kitchen, updated toilets, solar panels and electric car charging points.
  • Fully-installed fire and smoke alarm system
  • Ongoing maintenance keeping the building, car park and garden flowers etc. in excellent condition

A spacious tarmac car park adds convenience for visitors. During the summer season, the Institute transforms into an exhibition space for local artists, showcasing beautiful works in painting and ceramics.
